Haiti 2011

Hey friends and family,

Katie hasn't updated the blog in a while and I just wanted to take an opportunity to share a bit about our trip to Haiti last week.  My goal is to give everyone - particularly those who prayed and supported me financially for this trip - a brief overview of our time and hopefully lend some refreshing and life giving thoughts on everything we experienced.

A few thoughts before I get into the details of our trip:

1.  Even after having been there before and witnessing all of the unbelievable poverty and earthquake ravaged terrain, I don't think you can ever prepare yourself for this country.  The sights, smells, and sounds are simply overwhelming.  Many 3rd world nations have slums and extremely destitute areas, but this entire nation... like from boundary line to boundary line... is filthy, impoverished, and primitive.  Imagine the most graphic scenes from the movies Slum-Dog Millionaire and Blood Diamond - and apply them to the whole country.

2. The individual Haitians there are very hungry to learn…to learn how to live by the fruits of the Spirit, to love their spouses well, to prepare for marriage without even having met their spouse yet, and to be equipped and empowered to transform their individual communities. Many of the translators want to become Pastors with the hopes of pouring back into different areas of Grand Goave. Many of the young little ones simply want parental figures to hold them and play with them. The boys want to be told their strong. The girls want to know that they’re pretty and are as important as the boys.

So thankful for these ferocious brothers in Christ
(pictured from left - Jason Penland, Jonathan DeLay,
and Chris Burnett)
3. I was reading something about the Band of Brothers stories earlier this year – about how these men who’d served together, fought in the trenches together, and grew together during war-time when they were isolated with each other in foreign territory always felt bound to each other after their shared experiences. Even if they moved away or lost touch with one another, they always had a deep connection from the times they shared in the trenches. I feel like I’ve developed the same bonds with not only these guys shown in the picture, but all of the individuals on both this year and last year’s teams. I feel more connected to them and more bonded to our church (Cross Timbers Community Church) as a result.

4. Because of the extremely fractured nature of Haiti and the vulnerable state it seems to be in all of the time, there is a very strategic and intentional attitude about everyone who goes on the trips. I think everyone feels the weight and importance of every conversation and interaction with the individuals there. Everyone is very aware of the witness they are bearing and the heaviness of their impact on the Haitians. There are two things specifically that are great about this, the first is that obviously the people experience the heart of Jesus and feel His love in multiple circumstances (not just designated VBS times or teaching times but in all circumstances while we’re down there with them.) The other great thing is that the same attitude is brought back here. We all spoke about how we’ll view everyday interactions differently. Whether it’s at the car wash, at work, at the grocery store, or at the park, I’m confident everyone who went on the trip will be much more intentional and missional in their spheres of influence here locally.  Imagine the possibilities if we were all able as believers to view every person we come in contact with as someone who is a mirror of God and that has a soul.  What if we viewed each of those people as being spiritually trapped in burning buildings that could collapse and take them from us at any moment?  Would our level of urgency change?  Certainly a sobering thought...

Overall, I was reminded that even though we always go on a trip like with this with the expectation that we're going to help others, inevitably we're the ones who end up getting our socks blessed off.  So thankful to God and to all of you who have supported me, prayed for me, and helped me get there.  Having said all of that, I’m obviously so excited about everything else God has in store for Grand Goave and can't wait to go back...

Here is hopefully a not too long-winded break down of what we did down there after I've already written a lot.

DAY 1

The first day was mainly a travel day.  We made our way into Port-Au-Prince, Haiti via a connecting flight in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  After arriving in Port-Au-Prince we hopped onto the bus we would use for the week and rode about 2 hours out to a community called Grand Goave.  This was our primary target of community development and missional influence for this trip...and likely will be for the near future.  By the time we arrived at "Servants of all Ministry" (our base for the week) it was dinner time.  At nightfall and in the middle of an intense tropical thunderstorm we had one of the coolest dinner experiences of my life in an upper room of the orphanage - rolling thunder and downpouring showers provided the ambience for a kerosene lamp lit dinner with Haitian Food.  Awesome.

After that it was back to this super nice hotel accomodation thanks to Scott with Global Effect.

DAY 2

Before lunch we hit a local school for a quick opportunity to share the Gospel and speak on the importance of living out a Christ-like character.  My team of 3 and I spoke out of Matthew 22...focusing on Jesus' first and second greatest commandments "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind...and secondly...Love your neighbor as yourself."  The students' responses were receptive and encouraging but there were a few issues that we will continue to pray about.  There is a consistent disconnect between how males in the Haitian culture view their women and what the scriptures tell us about the subject.  Because their country is an every man for himself society, the males feel that their physical strength brings dominance and superiority over their female counterparts...this is prevalent at all levels.  Certainly something to continue to pray and work through on future trips.

That afternoon it was back to the "Servants of All"  Orphanage for our first stab at delivering a Haitian Vacation Bible School to the kids their.  We were quickly reminded that you have to ration your supplies or you plow through all of your resources the first afternoon.  Clearly, the children don't have many opportunities to color, make bracelets, or work on any kind of arts and crafts often, so there is no such thing as "one per person" to most of these kids.   Having said that, their child-like faiths and love for Jesus was inspiring and a reminder for me of how we need to engage our Creator as believers in every moment.

DAY 3

Me speaking to the school on Galatians 5
- the Fruits of the Spirit
Wednesday morning we made our way over to another Orphanage, Village, School Compound thing and spent the first part of the day with around 50 kids from about 5 to 10 years old. We had a great time telling them about Jesus, singing and coloring with them.  This was the first of a few opportunities for me to personally step up and practice walking in some Spiritual Gifts...as I was notified on the bus while we were driving over there that I would be the one preaching to them before their lesson.  It was a rewarding experience...one that would repeat itself again the next day before close to 100 kids...

We spent the last half of Wednesday at Servants of All and holding a marriage conference.  The Spirit totally spoke through Rick White (Our trip leader and Cross Timbers Campus Pastor) and it was great to see not only men and women who were struggling making their marriage a priority for improvement, but also some single guys grilling Pastor Rick with questions in order to just be better prepared and equipped for their future brides.  Afterwards, we were able to personally pray over some of these individuals.  Lots of blessings involved.

DAY 4

God moves every day.  Everything is authored by Him and happens because He sustains all things.  Having said that, it felt like God was revealing Himself to us as a group more and more each day collectively... with Thursday being the absolute climax of the trip.  I'll explain what I mean...

We were able to visit two schools in the morning: first a high school and then an elementary school. The high school kids were preparing for finals as well, so we were able to talk with them shortly and pray for them.  We had a great experience doing VBS at the elementary school.  Wonderful, well-behaved, Jesus-loving kids were at this place.  Thanks to Cheer coach Amanda Moore, we sang, danced, and played "Simon Says" to great avail with this group!

However it was that afternoon that we had the most gratifying experience of probably the entire trip.  We traveled up to the top of a mountain in Ti Goave to visit a small church. We had been told they needed tarps to replace the roof on both the pastor's home and church, so we made the trip up the mountain. Before I continue I need to explain the transportation situation in Haiti in case some of you aren't aware.  My buddy Chris Burnett (who came along on the trip with us) unpacked the situation perfectly in his own blog about our experience:

"utterly terrifying. There is no speed limit but hundreds of cars, pedestrians, buildings, blind turns, damaged pavement, detours through river beds, cars driving in all directions on either side of the road… in the mountains. I am convinced that our bus driver, Jacebeau would dominate NASCAR standings. He drove a massive truck full of terrified white people like he was threading a needle. Great opportunity to trust in God in my opinion."

After about 14 near death experiences heading up the mountain crammed into the Tap Tap shown above, we finally arrived at the primitive church you can see in the picture below. The view out to the rest of the island from this church was spectacular.

As I mentioned before, we helped them "re-roof" their home and church with some simple Tarp and Paracord we had brought with us. After doing so it was this next part that was easily the most overwhelming moment of the trip. As we began to say our goodbyes to the pastor and his family upon completing the roof work he told us to wait...and that he wanted to pray over us. Before the prayer he explained to everyone how long he had been praying for us to come...how he had been praying specifically for God's missionaries to come and bless them with a miracle. He cited the story of the blind beggar in Acts 3 who was healed by the disciples for his Faith in God and claimed that he felt God was lending him, his family, and his church the same provision that He gave the blind beggar that day. Unbelievable.

He compared us delivering a few simply items to a supernatural, mind bending miracle from Scripture. Items that anyone reading this could simply pick at a handful of local stores near their house...or that they maybe have laying around their garage. Something seemingly insignificant to us here in the states can be a bible sized miracle to someone else. I've often heard people here in Texas wonder why God has quit the miracle business that we see so often in the Bible. The truth is, we wake up in a miracle every day here. If you aren't worried about what you're going to eat tomorrow, then history says you're one of the wealthiest people to have ever lived. Let that soak in for a moment for the next time you hear someone question helping the nations abroad when there is so much to be done here stateside...

After his explanation, but before the prayer, the Pastor begain to sing over us in Creole. Before long his wife, children, and even the translators joined in as they sang a beautiful song of blessing over us. Let me just say that the tears were certainly flowing by that point. I was completely overcome with emotion by the whole experience. Then, just as only God does he sprinkled some icing on the cake for us - we opened our eyes to see one of the most gigantic, colorful, pronounced rainbows I've ever seen.

The picture doens't do it justice because it took me so long to sift through the weight of the moment.
DAY 5

Just for good measure, before we left on Friday to come back, God had it in his plans to publicly baptize two of his children in the pool of our Haitian hotel. Congrats again to Matt Fisher and Jonathan DeLay on a sweet experience and a blessing for me to witness personally.

Amazingly enough I feel like I've barely scratched the surface on all God did while we were there. Sorry for the length of the blog, but if you can't tell this trip has me as fired up as ever about everything the Spirit is doing. Thanks to all of our friends and family who once again prayed and supported us financially for this. Y'all have sewn into God's Kingdom more than you'll ever probably realize. Much love and you'll certainly be hearing from me about it again next year.

The exciting month of October

Goodness.  I am pretty sure that October 2010 has by far been the most crazy/eventful/exciting month the Martin Family has had in a while.  Here it goes.....

Oct. 1-3 -- Two baby showers!  One for Jamie on Friday night at La Hacienda Ranch...Yummy! =) and great margaritas! - better be for $11! (didn't know that until I got the check...) and Angela's on Saturday afternoon.  Both were so fun and they got lots of great things.

Sunday Ryan and I drove to Wichita Falls to watch his cousin Paige in a play called CATS. She was amazing!! I was able to finally see his Aunt and Uncles house which is so cute and very close to what we would consider our "dream home".

On top of all that, on the way to the musical I got a phone call letting me know my cousin Nicole was in labor!  She gave birth to Braxton Miles on Monday morning Oct. 4th...and they decided to wait to find out the sex so it was exciting to find out they had a little boy!  She has a precious little 2 1/2 year old girl already so now she has one of each ;)

Oct. 7 -- Trip to the Emergency Room!... Ryan had been complaining about a sharp pain in is stomach for like 2 weeks. The night before he had a high fever and woke up throwing up so I decided it was probably a good idea we head to the hospital.  He had to put down some disgusting looking drink, sit in a cold white room for two hours, and get a ct scan.  Finally, we were informed that Ryan had appendicitis and needed to get an appendectomy right away! Within about 15 minutes Ry was getting wheeled away to have his appendix out. It was so scary for me because we haven't had anything serious like this happen to one another.  Our family was so sweet helping out with K and sitting with me while he was in surgery...(which felt like forever!)...Come to find out his appendix had ruptured within itself...so...what was suppose to be a simple surgery and recovery ended up being just a tad more. We were at the hospital for a total of 5 days! He is feeling much better now and after all of this I have realized how much of a pain tolerance my hubby has...

(Leaving the Hospital)

Oct. 8 -- Another baby arrives!  I have yet to see the sweet little guy but he looks as precious as can be! Congrats Christi and Ross.

Oct. 15 -- Surprise party at Blue Mesa for Ryan's Aunt Ellen!  We had a lot of fun and the food was great! We always have a good time with them.

Oct. 16 --  Trip to Norman for the OU game and another baby born! On our way out the door to head to Norman we got a phone call that my sister had her baby boy! Welcome Beckett Bryar Moore!! He is such a handsome little man!

Oct. 22 -- Visitors come from all over the place! The Penlands came down from Tulsa and a few other friends of ours from Houston. They all came down for The Burnetts shower that we unfortunately had to cancel due to Addy coming early. However we had a blast hanging out and catching up.

Oct. 27 -- Addison Mae Burnett arrives 4 weeks early! She is as healthy and beautiful as they get!

Friday, October 8, 2010

Well I am finally taking the time to catch up on the blog while sitting here in the hospital room. Yep. Ryan had to have emergency surgery to get his appendix out today... Exciting! He is doing okay...just in a lot of pain. I hate seeing my hubby this way and can't wait for him to feel better. We are so blessed to have such amazing families. They have been so great. Mom dropped everything she had going on yesterday to watch Kaisley. Poor nana didn't think she was going to have a sleep over...Ryan's parents left their work to come sit with him. They also kept me company all day. :) He will stay here for a couple more days...he's not to excited about that... Then they will send him home with some meds and he'll get taken care of by his favorite nurse. ;)

So, Kaisleys party was a success. She got a ton of gifts and LOVED her GIANT cupcake i made her! I had so much fun getting ready for her party.I love all the little details that make it all come together. I will post pictures when i get back home to my computer(I'm on my parents nifty IPAD right now). I made her a little high chair banner that had her name on it. I made her a one year banner...it was so cute! It was labeled newborn to 12 months and i hung pictures of her at each month on it. I also made some cupcake cookies on a stick with the number one on them. I bagged them and put ribbon on them for party favors. My friend Beka made her an adorable cake that was very yummy. I made a giant cupcake for Kaisley's "smash" cake... She LOVED it although it was as big as her head! :) I really enjoyed making all of the decorations for her party and I though it made it unique. I would love to start doing that kind of stuff for people throwing showers, birthdays, etc.

Kaisley is getting to be such a big girl!! I feel like I say that every time i blog but she is just growing up so fast... Please tell me it slows down sometime... Well, I thought I would share some things about Miss K like I always do...

She...
-Is not quite walking by herself yet. She has been walking with help since before her birthday and has been taking a few steps on her own for the past few weeks. But actually yesterday when she came up here to visit her daddy she was taking like 5-10 steps!!!! So it wont be long.
-has two more teeth...her bottom molars...I think that makes 10 teeth total.
-still takes 2 naps a day...she loves her beauty sleep. ;) she has been such a good sleeper from day one.
-is kind of a picky eater these days... She's not a big fan of veggies...i need to search ways to hide them in her dinners. She loves flavor!! Not a big fan of bland foods...which is good!!
-has a lot of new friends and cousins being born. Her cousin Addy and her friend Landon arrived in April, cousin Krew in June, friend Hadley in September, cousin Braxton on Monday, cousin Beckett and friend Ben arriving any day now and friend Addison Mae arriving in November. Whew! They are going to be so fun to watch grow up together. :)
-She has an obsession with shoes! If she sees a pair of shoes she repeatedly says "choos" until you put them on her. It's quite funny. :)

At her 12 month checkup she weighed a whopping 17 lbs. She a petite girl!! :)

Tuesday, K and I went to the pumpkin patch with my mom and sis and her kiddos. We got a lot of great pictures that I will post later. It's so funny being in public with my sister and watching all the different looks she gets... Having a 5 1/2 month old while 37 weeks pregnant is just not physically possible... ;)

Well with all the babies being born lately I have been quite busy with hosting showers. It's been a lot of fun planning and decorating(pictures to come of my sisters). Pretty much every weekend in September was booked with a shower. And I have one at the end of the month which is going to be so fun and special for our good friends, the Burnetts.

Well I better go tend to my sweet hubby...

Blessings,
Katie

One month away from turning ONE!!

Wow! People can tell you over and over to cherish every moment of your kids life because it flies by but you never truly get it until you have one. I seriously can not believe K is going to be a year old in a month. She is becoming such a big girl these days. Her "babyness" is going away. *tear* =( We're so proud of her though and have enjoyed watching her learn new things this past year.

As of 11 months Miss Kaisley....
-is almost standing on her own
-can walk if your holding one of her hands
-likes to wave and do the sniffles at everyone she sees while we are shopping
-eats EVERYTHING and ALWAYS seems hungry
-new things we have tried are pork, taco meat, yogurt, blueberry pancakes(made by mommy), broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, cheerios, animal crackers, big girl oatmeal, cheese, tomatoes, turkey sausage, and strawberries
-loves the book Goodnight Moon. We have been reading it since she was 5 months. She likes to turn the pages.
-on that note she likes to open and close all things
-dances to music
-wears mostly 9 month clothes but can still fit into some 3-6months stuff
-has 6 teeth
-still wakes up at 7:30, takes 2 naps and goes to bed around 8
-drinks A LOT of water. that girl is ALWAYS thirsty

We're going to start the "weaning" process in a week....please pray that she does okay with that. pray for me too..... I think it's going to be a sad day when I'm completely done nursing her. =(

I've started planning Miss K's birthday party...So excited! I'm goin all out! ;) My next post will probably be about her party...might be a couple months but it's coming... =)

Eventful Weekend...

Last weekend (June 11-13) we had our annual family reunion for my dad's side. It was so much fun like always. I love seeing everyone and wish we could see them more than once a year. Everyone drives in Friday night/Saturday morning and stays all weekend. We hung out by the pool, went fishing, rode horses, ate yummy lunch and dinners, etc. So much fun!!

The Thursday before the reunion my dog Rocky figured out how to get out of the fence... (we live in my parents guest house right now and they live on like 50 acres...) Rocky is not the best at coming to you when you ask him to.... soooo annoying! So when he gets out it's never fun. Mylie is our other boxer and she jumps the fence and always has but she comes to you when you call her so it isnt that big of a deal when she gets out. Most of the time she just comes straight to the front door. So Thurday morning Rocky got out and no one could catch him. Luckily he stayed on their property but spent all day messing with the other animals and playing in the pond. Finally by like 8:30PM he decided he was hungry and ready to come home so he came pounding on the front door... urrrgh! Even more annoying is that he decided to not only mess with the farm animals but to play with a little skunk!!! SOOO he reeked of skunk and we are still trying to get that smell off of him! phew!!

The Saturday of the reunion was such a relaxing day. We just hung by the pool and caught up with everyone. Stinky Rocky stayed in his kennel in the garage but Mylie came down and hung out with us by the pool. There was another boxer there named Rally and they became best buds. Mylie showed her around the place and they played all day. Later in the day some of us were still relaxing by the pool while others rode the horses. Someone came to Ryan and I and told us that Rocky had gotten out and that they think one of our dogs got hit by a car... Immediately Ryan ran out the door and down the rode. He grabbed Rocky, (he actually came to him) put him inside and headed to 407. ( my parents live right off 407...the speed limit is 55...) He found Mylie lying on the side of the rode. We are pretty sure she died instantly. By the time I got there Ryan and my aunt were loading her into my aunts truck and my sister handed me her collar and said she was gone. We took her to the back pasture and buried her. Not the best ending to a wonderful day but I know that she had so much fun with Rally and all the people that were around. (she loves people!!) She was so good with Kaisley. She was such a wonderful dog and we miss her very much! Rocky has been wandering around the house looking for her... :(

Sunday everyone said their goodbyes and headed home! For the most part it was a great weekend!

My new niece!

My sis and brother in law adopted a baby girl on April 21st. She is precious and such a special baby! We love her so much! Jen and Sean had been trying to get pregnant for 3 1/2 years and last fall decided that they wanted to adopt. This February they fell in love with a birth mom and patiently waited for their new baby girl to get here.
